CindyHi Cindy – I love this plant too – so easy to propagate too. The rainwater mine gets in the winter helps with that. Also, it’s best to not keep them anyplace hot. It blooms often and is in a secluded spot where it doesn’t get direct sun and since it is windy here in Fairfield California it is protected. The little gnatties like to feast on dead and decaying plant matter, and love it moist. Oh, I love to create so you’ll find a bit of that in the mix along with lots of videos too. I’ll b doing an updated post & video on this within the next couple of months. The leaves aren’t falling off or yellowing or anything, they’re fine in colour, but they’re soft and wrinkled.

This plant is easy to propagate, and not too picky on too much sun versus too little. So yes, start spraying them now. It is scary when all those leaves start to come off...the key is to move it as little as possible when transplanting (having an extra set of hands around helps). Depending on the temperature and light in your home, a thorough watering once a month will probably be enough. For cuttings, I wait until I can see some roots, or until I feel a little resistance when I Just in case you guys didn't notice - original thread started in 2006 and the last post by growforit was in 2012...hope he/she re-potted that plant :)In case of Burro's tail, I found that it likes little more water than other succulents.I stuck few broken branches into soil and it got rained on a lot - they really took off. It never recovered! They should be turning downward, especially at 12″. Be prepared to loose leaves when you transplant it – this is not due to shock but because they fall off easily. Sounds like the light might be the issue. All it takes is one tiny white cottony looking fleck....I think you solved your problem, don't buy any house plants, because if you neglect them then you are not enjoying them.

Burro’s tail likes to be kept root bound in a small pot, so it is possible that you will never have to repot it. NellHi Nell, I recently purchased a sedum morganianum on-line and it arrived very healthy and in a 6″ pot. Here are 2 reasons why I think the guy in the store told you this: 1) the plant is small & the roots have not fully formed &/or 2) the leaves of this plant fall off so easily that if you’re not careful, that small plant will be almost stripped of foliage.

I’ve followed your instruction on water, sunlight…etc… i live in central Germany and it is rainy and humid. Since spring/summer is the optimum time to repot I will do so now. The smaller is white, the mature is this grey, and they are highly detailed. Here are the most common reasons (including 1 you mentioned) that leaves fall off of a Burro’s Tail Sedum: 1) mechanical damage – a person or animal has brushed them. I thought they may be a fungus or from bugs and online it said to wipe it off with alcohol. Try to avoid soaking the leaves if you can. Don’t water it too often & try to avoid wetting the foliage too much. There is no way for the cuttings to take up the water until they produce roots. I do 'clean up plants' and 'toss badly infected plants pot and all' ... at times I can find a part of the plant that is almost clean, hand clean a few small flecks off, and put it into an isolation cutting cup-and toss the main plant. At first I thought it was underwatering, but the issue persisted, then I thought it might be overwatering, and the issue STILL persisted. They are on a covered but sunny screened porch It is really good for people to know the difference size makes.The only reason I can see right now would be lack of light. It takes a little while for those new plants to form so be patient. To get more Tales growing do I have to propagate more, or will more tails start to grow? :)The point that burro's tail doesn't get much of a root system is noted - I will be careful during the repotting. Together with the succulent soil, the best drainage for Burro’s Tail is achieved also by a good draining pot. It is not a good idea to completely repot or transplant mature plants as it is very difficult to avoid damaging the plant.

How can I help it grow? I think we would all appreciate a picture, as it will help to correctly identify your problem (or lack thereof). Since then the leaves started falling out and it’s drying up by the bottom of the stems, it’s not the same plant I bought it got a few tails left. But the new one, suddently lost many of the leaves. Better some damage as a small plant, which would grow and recover quickly, than as a larger plant which might be left with more obvious bare stems if damage occurred.Thanks Steve, I seem to have gone too fast over her 2nd paragraph, thanks for catching that, I stand (sit) corrected! It was previously planted in wooden barrel pot, which rotted last year. What could I be doing wrong?Hi Melissa – When fleshy succulents loose leaves, it’s usually 1 of 3 things: mechanical damage, light (not enough or too much hot sun) or watering (usually too much). So I repotted the plant in the largest diameter pot I could find at the big box store (18" diameter, plastic). Get it into a pot just slightly larger than what its in currently. Mine is up against the house and shows no signs of stress during those brief chilly spells. :)The point that burro's tail doesn't get much of a root system is noted - I will be careful during the repotting. While the stems are healing off, you want to keep them in bright light but not in direct sunlight. I still have it, but it's pretty sad looking. Its August not much blooming, but a few tree's have lovely Autumn flowers, and of course, gourds and a pumpkin will soon be available.....Mix up your need for a plant with these ideas. I can tell you that they VERY rarely bloom indoors so you probably won’t see any unless you move to a climate where they can grow outdoors year round. It seems to me if it is going to be repotted now is the time, before the branches are hanging down completely. They don’t root too deep. I'm afraid to trim the tail end of the root so I can plant it in the center of the pot. They were given to me in a plastic cup with a little water in it.
