tub surround coming loose

PDA. Rather do whatever is necessary once and be finished. So, I went back over it again with white caulk.

I have applied at least twice now a caulk strip around our bathtub and surround and it looks great for a week and then starts working itself loose from the suround and tub. but... the ceramic tiles in the hall bath surrounding the tub were loose- (to the point I took them out rather than have them break and not be able to find replacements) The tile tiles were laid up on a wetbed that seems to be intact and sound. ========== I would not try to repair your tub surround with the hope of using it again as a grab bar.

One tip I would have loved to know (and of course, discovered it after the fact) is that you should fill the tub completely with water and leave it filled until the caulk is cured, to prevent the break-away effect that can occur when you step into a freshly-caulked tubs (you know, your weight being different from zero weight and all). - Installed a nice fiberglass tub/shower surround 4 years ago over newly installed moisture resistant 1/2" … Anything else I should try?

06-09-2008, 04:51 PM. Did he leave the tub full until it cured? I'm going to try using a coarse (36 grit) paper on my belt sander to try and remove it , then reset the tiles and silicon between the bottom of the first course and tub.

Did he leave the tub full until it cured? Some of that may have to do with the fact that our tub isn’t level with respect to the walls, so the surround near the faucet was MUCH higher than near the back end of the tub.Surprisingly enough, the space behind the tub did NOT have any mold.

If there was mold, here’s where it’s going to be.You can’t see the gross mildew here, but trust me- it was bad.This should give you a better idea of the mildew “issue.”After a thorough cleaning, the baseboards were ready to place.

Using a generous amount of silicone caulk I placed the baseboard around the tub, joining up at seams as tightly as possible.

That should work great!I took them home, measured how tall I needed them to be (no more than 2 inches high), drew a line across them, and took an exacto knife to cut them to size.The cut piece was measured with my sewing ruler, and I drew the line on the back side of them with a pencil.

Greg . If it is the "standard" tub & surround you may actually be pulling the plastic loose from the wall. That is some serious thinking right there. I let all that dry for about two hours as I went to work. If not too much they were probably too dry when installed, a simple unsanded thinset should fix them,if there isn't any movement or termite problems. The alcohol removes any oils and soaps then evaporates instantly. Problem is, the caulking around the bottom of the tile field, where it meets the tub, keeps popping out. Our tub had needed a caulk job since the day we moved in… a year ago (yeah, I’d been putting it off). *** Don't Laugh at me for this idea.
