This nurse was Marie Marcello, ( Gina Lollobrigida ) who was very beautiful and had plenty of sex appeal both to Anthony and his uncle Charles. A psychologist pioneers a research study at a prison. Woman of Straw is a 1964 crime thriller directed by Basil Dearden and starring Gina Lollobrigida and Sean Connery. Candella, longtime friend of the Rome family, walks a tightrope in the case of cop-killer Martin Rome. It's not surprising his nephew (Sean Connery) would want to do him in. Connery plays the nephew of cantankerous and crippled old business tycoon Ralph Richardson, who hires nurse Gina Lollobrigida to care for his uncle. Gems like this have me hanging on every word. I liked it because it sustained attention...and I had not previously seen a movie with Lola in it...and Sean playing the villain; Ralph was so good in "O Lucky Man!" I felt that the way that old Richmond treated the servants was extremely racist and uncalled-for; I hope that this movie could not have been made today, with its decimatingly cruel treatment of persons who are not of the so-called white elite.

Gina Lollobrigida was reportedly "demanding and temperamental" during the filming, frequently clashing with Connery and Dearden. A nurse (Maria) from a poor Italian family, is initially hired to care for the tycoon. Naturally, Connery has a hidden agenda, and it’s a refreshing change to see him playing a smooth urbane villain instead of a smooth urbane hero, but the film takes so long establishing its characters that, by the time the story picks up you’re not that interested. 6 Responses to “Movie Review – WOMAN OF STRAW (1964).” Patti Abbott Says: December 8th, 2008 at 12:57 pm. This story concerns itself all around a very wealthy billionaire named Charles Richmond, (Ralph Richardson) who was a very evil man and loved to mistreat everyone he came in contact with and treated his servants just like dogs and even the dogs hated this Charles. Dardo, a Robin Hood-like figure, and his loyal followers use a Roman ruin in Medieval Lombardy as their headquarters as they conduct an insurgency against their Hessian conquerors. But he managed to break out of the typecase, and pop up in non-Bond roles like Amundsen in THE RED TENT, Edward Pearce in THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, Daniel Dravot in THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, and Eliot Ness's ill-fated mentor in THE UNTOUCHABLES (which finally netted him an Oscar).
