The time span means nothing gets told in detail, so the film consists of a series of small vignettes, which are alright as far as they go, but it's not a film which really engages you. For those who say it has no story, no plot... it is about life- People's lives.... and all of our lives are stories. Fantastic concept for a movie that worked out surprisingly well. The life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college. It's authentic. Just a long list of failed relationships, but somehow everyone ends up in the same lace at the end.

Maybe that is in part the point, but I can't help find the film's perspective too varnished and lacking in the pain and ambiguity that often accompanies adolescence. This is a movie that truly surprised me. For some people including myself you tend to be able to relate to a lot of the events in Masons life as he continues to age. The fact that they filmed children for 12 years and the return of actors from earlier sequences is just a sidenote. I still don't know what it was I watched!
